Marion Downs was a trailblazer in pediatric audiology who transformed the way hearing loss is identified and treated. At a time when most experts dismissed early testing and thought it was unnecessary, Marion challenged that belief and in doing so, changed countless lives. She faced constant opposition, with many in the field rejecting her research, but she never gave up. Through her perseverance, she led the first large-scale newborn hearing screenings, and her advocacy helped make early detection a standard practice. Because of her dedication, nearly every baby born in the U.S. today is screened for hearing loss before leaving the hospital. This is so important because identifying hearing loss early allows everyone to receive the care and support they need to develop language, communication, and social skills during the critical first months of life. 

What inspires me most about Marion is her relentless courage and compassion. She turned resistance into progress and built a legacy that continues to impact families around the world.
