MALLARY CHAPMAN

My Pioneer: Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton is a pioneer as a female country music artist but she inspires me more because of her philanthropic work. She never forgot her humble roots and where she came from and she was committed to helping the people of her hometown. Inspired by her own father’s inability to read, Dolly founded the Imagination Library in 1995. What started out providing books to preschoolers in her hometown, this program now provides 1 book a month for children until the age of 5 in 5 countries, distributing over 2 million books a month.

What makes Dolly a Pioneer is that she didn’t let her past define her. She had a dream and she followed it, even with the road being bumpy along the way. While not always easy, she kept going. And while she was becoming a big star, she also never forgot that community that she grew up in. She believes in the future of our children and invests in those dreams. I think she embodies all of the Omlie values including pursuing wonder and cultivating joy.
