LAURA YUH

My Pioneer: Patsy Mink

Patsy Mink was the first woman of color elected to the US House of Representatives and the first Asian-American woman in Congress. She inspires me because after dealing with her own personal experiences of racially and sex-based discrimination, she devoted her entire career to creating and championing policies that opened doors for women, children, and minorities. A great example of legislation work is Title IX. Patsy was a co-author and co-sponsor for Title IX, which prohibits sex-based discrimination in all education programs. This covers multiple aspects of education including, but not limited to, course selections, housing, and athletics.

Patsy really embodied what a true pioneer is by forging new paths for women, children, and minorities, and by also showing the true value of uniting in diversity, which is one of our guiding principles here at Omlie!

The Best Advice I Ever Got:

“Control the controllables.”

This piece of advice came from my mom during my collegiate athlete days, and it has stuck with me ever since. It’s a simple but powerful reminder that while you can’t control every circumstance, you can always control your effort, attitude, preparation, and response. Whether it’s on the field, in the office, or navigating life’s unexpected challenges, focusing on what you can influence makes all the difference. It’s my favorite reminder to stay grounded, adaptable, and motivated to keep pushing forward.
