My Pioneer: Clara Barton

Clara Barton is the founder of the American Red Cross and also known as the “Angel of the Battlefield.”
 
I’m inspired by Clara not just for what she built, but for how she showed up. She didn’t wait to be invited, she moved toward true human need, especially where there was inequity or suffering. Whether teaching herself medical care to save her brother, opening a public school for children who were not given equal opportunity, or going straight to the front lines of war uninvited, she built what didn’t exist and went where she wasn’t asked, because it was the right thing to do.
 
That connects deeply to 2 of Omlie’s values of Pursue Wonder and Embrace Authenticity. Clara trusted how she was wired, even when it challenged the norms of her time. What stays with me is a quote of hers: “You must never think of anything but the need and how to meet it.” It’s how I am wired and she’s given me permission to operate authentically; lock in on the need unapologetically until solved, always in service of people.
