My Pioneer: Nellie Bly
All throughout her career, Nellie exposed corruption, the injustice of poverty, and the marginalization of women. Nellie pioneered investigative journalism by going undercover as a patient in a women’s mental health institution in order to expose the brutality and neglect that the residents were facing, leading to significant reforms. Her work would establish credibility of female reporters beyond traditional topics like fashion and gossip.
Nellie was a beacon of bravery, and had so much empathy to learn from those around her; she embodied the true traits of a pioneer who pursues wonder, embraces authenticity, and leaves the world better than they found it, like we strive to do here at Omlie.
